Our outdoor Memory Café is the first and presently the only in the U.S.A., as we learned from Jyette Lokvig PhD, the author of the book in which our café is featured (p.57-59), “The Alzheimer’s And Memory Café: How to Start and Succeed With Your Own Café,” 2016.
The experience is one in which:
~ we welcome friends with any form of memory hiccups
~ we ask care partners to accompany any person needing help
~ we invite care partners to come alone simply for a respite break
~ we encourage you to bring a picnic (carry-in, carry-out)
~ we provide a working garden type of environment (we’ll be weeding, pruning, raking, mulching, planting, harvesting, etc. and we’re happy to stop the work to say hi, describe our program, interpret the gardens, offer a quick tour, sing and dance with you, enjoy bird or fish tales with you, and/or assist you with a flower fun craft project)
Once-a-month we will continue to offer wheelchair-accessible gardens via our Sunday Stroll program. This will be the one day a month that we prepare the gardens for the best wheelchair-access, and the gardens for “show.” Please check our Sunday Stroll event list, and the online calendar for updates.
Please call or e-mail with any questions. Small group leaders are welcome to “come and see,” or please contact me to schedule a “come and see” tour and tea. Interested Volunteers, age 14+ ~ please contact me! We need you!
We look forward to seeing old and new friends!
Moving forward with a listening heart,
vision, inquiry, and action,
~ Mary
