Two members of the New England Rose Society, have visited within the past two weeks to teach us more about how to care for our rose plants (Marlene Norton, society secretary, from Danvers, MA and Andy Vanable, American Rose Society “Yankee District” newsletter writer, from Harrisville, RI). These two shared with me about what to spray, when to spray, and “sustainable roses” that don’t need to be sprayed. We learned that rose fertilization is recommended once-a-month, June-August.
In the last two weeks, three rose plants were eaten from the root base by voles (New Dawn, First Prize, and Angel Face). We’ve applied an organic product around the base of the remaining roses, “Vole Scram,” to hopefully deter them.
We’re also learning to manage insects, bunnies, and deer!
Forty-nine rose plants are accessible. Twenty-nine plants are wheelchair-accessible along the MargFMac Front Garden Loop (0.1 mile). Nine are accessed by walking on relatively flat grass or ground ~ in the Kitchen Garden, Ornamental Trees & Shrubs, and Cottage Garden. Eleven are accessed by walking up or down a grassy hill.
Our Rose Rodeo is made possible by a generous individual contribution by Peggy Roy, in loving memory of my mom, Margaret Fraser MacDonald. Partly funded by MA DDS (2017 Memory Café).
ACCESS. DIGNITY. BEAUTY. RESPITE. RECREATION.
Moving forward with a listening heart,
vision, inquiry, and action,
~ Mary
