Morning Report: Building Terraced Beds

Karl Builds Terraced Beds in the Kitchen Garden
On Good Friday, a day off, Karl started his weekend spring project: building wood-framed terraced beds in the Roses and Kitchen Garden. This type of design is something we’ve imagined for a couple of years. You may remember my Morning Report: Terraced Veggies post in May, 2014, when we initially laid-out the garden beds and trails. Karl chose to use a green, untreated Hemlock for the frames. This choice is in harmony with our desire to garden as organically as possible, without harmful chemicals. Karl also measured the width of the trails to be a minimum 36 inches, so that family and friends using walkers and wheelchairs may in the future have access to view the growing fruits and veggies. The beds will help maintain soil moisture in areas that have traditionally been dry. We are also noticing with this new build that we’ll have an easier time maintaining the trails and the garden beds because of the definition and structure.
A project still-in-process, we’re enjoying the beauty of the design as well as the function.
Creative! Accessible! Sustainable!
Moving forward with a listening heart,
vision, inquiry, and action,
