Morning Report: Spreading Seedlings

Look closely at the base of this photo to see the shiny dark green leaves of a small columbine plant. I recently harvested columbine seedlings from a few of our established plants, and transplanted them to locations that better compliment the overall garden design and experience.
Now is a good time to look about your garden for seedlings that have sprouted up from last season’s seeding. Very often you can notice baby plants very near established parent perennials. Very early and very late in the growing season is the best time to move plants around, as they are, in spring, still waking up, and in the fall, going to sleep, and will be the least disturbed. Spreading perennial seedlings around in the spring is a great way to grow your garden without added expense. Ensure that you:
a. Capture as much of the established root system as possible.
b. Water the transplant after transplanting.
c. Watch for wellness the first few days and weeks to assist thriving.
