2020 Summer Interns Graduate!

Our 2020 Interns: Sam & Maya Evans of Topsfield, MA
Our 2020 Interns: Sam & Maya Evans of Topsfield, MA, demonstrate a safer-than-a-fist-bump: the elbow bump!
Yesterday, Maya and Sam Evans (Masconomet High School students going into their Junior Year) graduated from our summer internship program with 80 volunteer hours!

I received cover letters and resumes from these two ~ fraternal twins ~ in early June, a few weeks after their Mother’s Day Stroll with their family small group (3-generations). We scheduled independent onsite interviews over two weeks, and they were accepted into our summer program.

At the beginning of the eight-week program (the students decided the length of the program), the students identified 3 personal learning goals.
1. They learned better posture for less pain!
2. They learned six tools used in the garden!
3. They learned five types of roses!
4. They contributed towards building Accessible Gardens!
5. They learned communication skills!
6. They learned to ask for feedback!

Maya and Sam really enjoyed learning to use power tools ~ the circular saw, power drill, and leaf blower!

This was our second year mentoring summer student interns, and our first year to accept high schoolers, “16 going on 17,” for a summer internship experience. Last year, 2019, we mentored an Endicott College Freshman, Acme Wasi of Newbury, MA, over a twelve week, 120-hour summer internship.

We enjoy having youth and young adults involved in our programs. Their presence enriches the experience of everyone involved, volunteering and working here. The students report that our inclusive environment and caring approach allows for:
A. A successful first internship experience.
B. A personalized internship program.
C. Unexpected personal development and growth.
