The Memory Café at
Rest-Stop-Ranch

What is the Memory Café Movement?
The Memory Café concept began in 1997 when Dutch psychologist Dr. Bère Miesen sought to break the isolation and stigma often associated with Alzheimer’s and dementia. He envisioned a welcoming, informal space where people facing cognitive changes and their loved ones could simply “be” without fear of judgment.
Today, this grassroots movement has expanded globally into thousands of cafes. While each cafe is unique to its community, they all share a common goal: providing a supportive, failure-free environment focused on social connection, joy, and leaving the disease at the door. Memory Cafés are not clinical programs, formal support groups, or drop-off respite care; they are shared experiences designed to strengthen the bond between the care-receiver and care-partner.
The Rest-Stop-Ranch Difference: A Nature-Based Approach
At Rest-Stop-Ranch in Topsfield, we have reimagined the traditional indoor cafe. Recognized as the first outdoor Memory Café in the U.S.A. (established in 2015 and featured in Dr. Jyette Lokvig’s book, The Alzheimer’s and Memory Café), our program harnesses the healing power of the natural world.

- Spring & Summer (April – October): We meet outside, rain or shine, in our wheelchair-accessible gardens. Participants can enjoy bird watching, interacting with the koi pond, picnicking, and guided nature crafts.
- Fall & Winter (November – March): We gather warmly indoors at the Caretaker’s Cottage. We bring nature inside through hands-on horticultural therapy, such as flower arranging and sensory plant crafts.
When We Meet: The 2nd Saturday of every month, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM.
Cost: Free of charge (though optional donations to help cover craft supplies are gratefully accepted).
What to Expect During Your Visit
We warmly welcome individuals living with Alzheimer’s, related dementias, brain injuries, or Down Syndrome with memory changes, along with their family or professional care partners.
- A Shared Experience: This is an activity for duos. Care partners are required to stay and participate in the fun.
- Failure-Free Activities: From drum circles and seated dancing to tactile nature crafts, our activities are designed to be accessible and stress-free for all cognitive levels.
- Networking & Fellowship: It’s a wonderful opportunity for care partners to organically meet others walking a similar path, exchange encouragement, and build a local support network.
