Morning Report: Kitchen Garden

Peppers, Kale, Basil on the counter
Kitchen Garden Harvest
Our kitchen garden is the “Fruit and Veggie Garden.” It feels so good to harvest our tomatoes, peppers, basil, kale, and summer squash, cook it up, and can it for the winter! Blanching tomatoes for the first time last night showed me why plum tomatoes are favored for sauce… they are easier to peel and have greater density. Never before did I understand this. There is something to growing and preparing your own food that is wholesome and is much more affordable than buying organic at the store. If you can manage making the time for this, I highly recommend it.
A week ago I picked up a copy of Michelle Obama’s 2012 book, American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America. It is a fun, highly readable book offering a lot of variety; learn about: what to grow in your garden plus recipes for every season, garden design & maintenance, community gardens, city gardens, the White House garden, tips for eating healthy and staying active from role models like Michelle Kwan (figure skater) and Grant Hill (basketball player). The photographs and illustrations are great throughout the book, showing a lot of different garden types, designs, delectable dishes, and people moving and having fun.
I’m excited and energized to spend more time in our garden!
Moving forward with a listening heart,
vision, inquiry, and action,
~ Mary
