Rooted in Love

Born from a caregiving journey, grown with compassion. The story of how a private struggle became a public sanctuary.

From Heartbreak to Healing

Rest-Stop-Ranch was not built as a business; it was built as a necessity. In 2008, our founder Mary E. MacDonald was navigating the “avalanche” of caring for her parents.

As Mary and her husband Karl Ackerman cared for them, they hit a painful wall: the world was not built for their new reality.

When Margaret passed in 2008, Mary and Karl made a vow: No other family should feel this trapped. They would build the sanctuary they wished they had.

A Landscape Reborn

The history of our land is a metaphor for the healing we offer.

1950s: The Gravel Pit
Strip-mined for gravel to build Route 95, the land was left scarred and abandoned.

Today: The Sanctuary
Mary and Karl turned old gravel roads into wheelchair-accessible trails. This land has known trauma—and has bloomed in spite of it.
